Quick to hold your tongue

I was raised old school. Talking back to an elder or speaking out of turn was unacceptable. The advise my elders would give is; “Don’t let your mouth write a check your butt can’t cash.” In other words, don’t allow disrespectful rhetoric that you can’t back up come out of your mouth – the consequences may be more than you can handle.

The Word says; “Keep your tongue from evil And your lips from speaking deceit.” (Psalms 34:13)

Where am I going with this? Lies begets lies. There’s a tremendous amount of misinformation circulating. We have become a world that live by sound bites – with devastating consequences. One liners and snappy come backs might work great in echo chambers to feed the mob mentalities, but real work and relationship is what it takes to get things done right.

I learned as a child that a snappy comeback or a “smart mouth” can get you smacked. We actually deserve that preverbal smack when we disobey how Jesus has instructed us to deal with disagreements.

““Now if your brother sins , go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that on the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter may be confirmed. And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, he is to be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.” ‭‭(Matthew‬ ‭18:15-17‬)

Listen, what’s the point of winning an argument if the person didn’t see Christ in you? I would submit the enemy won that point.

Brothers and sisters I pray for healing in broken relationships and courage to build new ones. Have a wonderful and blessed day!
